Bridge to Nowhere Hike - East Fork San Gabriel River

Bridge to Nowhere

One of the favorite hikes in the San Gabriel Mountains. The trail head is the launch for a bunch of other GREAT adventures. (Allison Mine, Horseshoe Mines, Stanley-Miller Mine, Iron Mountain.)

______

Having hiked the bridge over 40 times... here are some notes:

-Bring a flashlight: It gets dark fast in the canyon. Have hiked out in the dark about 10 times.
-Be VERY careful in the mines.
-Water level varies from ankle to neck high.
-FLASH flood warning: The road IS washed out most of the way to the bridge.
-Feet: Going to get wet. Get over it.

If you don't miss any of the trails and move fast without breaks, you can get to the bridge in 1.5 hours. If you have a big group and try to keep you feet dry... have slow people... 4.5 hours each way. 1 mph is 10 hours on your feet... kinda miserable.

Indian Grinding Mortar

Bring 1-2 liters of water and FILTER for group. In summer, 100 degree heat... we usually drink 5-7 liters of water... too much to carry all day. Better to drink water straight from stream than die of dehydration. I have had to call in helicopter evac for a guy we found on trail once.

5 gals got stranded in dark on wrong side of stream in rain one winter night. The water was over their heads and they were near hypothermic... we managed to pull them across... I spend 20 minutes in freezing water pulling them across... near hypothermic myself... miserable cold. Bring flashlight.
